The Land-Prawn Hunters

These Fuzzies are methodical hunters. I've been filming them killing land-prawns, and it's impressive. Each one has their own technique, but they all share the same basic understanding: behead the prawn first to stop it from struggling, then flip it over and crack the undershell to get at the meat. Little Fuzzy runs alongside his prey and pivots to deliver a precise chop. Mamma goes for the legs first. Ko-Ko strikes a dramatic pose before delivering the killing blow.

But here's what really gets me: they make tools to make tools. I found the wooden prawn-killer that Little Fuzzy had abandoned when he found my chisel. It was carefully crafted, rubbed smooth with sandstone, with a paddle at one end sharp enough to behead a prawn and a pointed end to use as a pick. He'd known exactly what he wanted when he started making it, worked on it until it was perfect, and stopped before overrefinement could damage it.

That's not just tool use. That's engineering. That's abstract thinking. That's sapience.
